Aptitude, Preference, and Personality

The Meyers-Briggs personality test measures four characteristics
1. Introvert(I)/Extrovert (E)
2. Intuitive (N)/Sensing (S)
3. Thinking (T)/Feeling (F)
4. Judging (J)/ Perceiving (P)

Here's a simplified explanation
1. Introverts get their energy from solitude; Extroverts recharge at parties
2. Intuitives analyze the unseen; Sensates engage the tangible
3. Thinkers think with logic; Feelers think with emotion
4. Judgers seek final decisions; Perceivers pursue options

If you take the test, you'll get a grouping of letters. Mine, for instance, is INTJ.

Now I had an insight this morning: Whatever your "personality", the letters will reflect your preferences, not necessarily your aptitude. We tend to assume otherwise--that personality type reflects personality strengths.

Sometimes however...
  • Extroverts are social idiots and introverts are smooth socialites
  • Sensates are highly intutitive, intuitives completely blind
  • Feelers are brilliantly logical and thinkers exquisitely sensitive
  • Judgers are horrifying decision makers while perceivers nail the right choice every single time
Personality tests are useful tools. They simplify people and relationships. These simplifications make many confusing things understandable. But simplifications are simplifications. Ultimately, people are not personalties. They are incomprehensible marvels

Nice summary, Barry.

And a much needed reminder about aptitude.

We talk a bit about this w/ my friends in Cali, I'll send them to your post.

I'm glad you go to talk to John, too.

I very much enjoyed this post! Everything understandable, and true. I did not quite realize we are so much the same... yet thankful you were able to articulate what I have not.
